Thanksgiving weekend 2016

Some years, you just have to roll with things. This year for Thanksgiving, we were all packed up and ready to head up north to be with my family, when at 7am Thursday morning, my Dad called with the very sad news that both my parents were severely sick in bed (later the doctors confirmed BOTH flu and pneumonia)... Terrible!!! After all their preparation and hard work, what a sad turn of events. My sister's family also got hit with the stomach flu at the same time, so our travel plans screeched to a halt and we were looking around our house thinking "now what?"... Guess what is special - my husband is an amazing cook and he doesn't even have to plan in advance like me, in order to make yummy things. So he threw on his coat, went to Winco at 8am on Thanksgiving morning. He triumphantly arrives home with enough "surf & turf"  to feed a crowd. Crab, shrimp, steak, ribs, broccoli, mashed potatoes, pie...

I think we all felt a bit strange with our big push to travel and be with family, and then it all switching gears. We did have a beautiful meal (Marin even made her own Stovetop stuffing!), followed by Husky football, shooting in the woods, a new Christmas tree farm to explore (Christmas Tree Mountain), and the start of the new holiday season.Sometimes you just gotta shake some lemonade out of that lemon tree. I'm so thankful for my family, near and far.

Zoo Day

The days are gone when I get a season's pass to the zoo, or the children's museum. I remember going to both places ALL the time when they were little. But never fear, because that doesn't mean we can't still go :) I love that my big (little) kids still ask to go to both of these places, and they all still love it!

We had a day off school, and so I packed them up and we explored the zoo on a cold fall day. It was perfection.

Of course we had elephant ears.
A couple of my kids were relieved by this sign.

Las Vegas & turning Foh-Tay

I did it! I turned 40! And I'm still alive to tell about it :) To celebrate this milestone birthday, three of my girlfriends and I, from all corners of the country, came together to have a girls weekend together in the shiny town of Las Vegas. We descended from Oregon, Georgia and Connecticut, for realz... Isn't that amazing? That these special friends of mine would commit time, childcare, hubby blessing, money, energy to make this happen! I still feel so incredibly blessed by these three women, and am so so SO thankful we could spend an entire three day weekend laughing, running around, telling awesome stories, sharing a lot of eye rolls, people watching, touristing, eating, drinking, hair-spraying, accessorizing, penny-slotting, walking fast, walking slow, cackling like chickens about our funny hysterical lives. Believe it or not, we even had some serious moments, sharing our hearts and catching up on 4-6 years of not living on the same coast together. Oh how I enjoyed each and every solitary moment. God's gift to me is for SURE friendship.

Not to be overlooked, is my sweet family, which not only gave their blessing on my weekend away, but did their own special things to celebrate my birthday. Cake and candles, around the table affirmation, and special little cards & notes. Kyle took all the kids to Charming Charlie and they each themselves picked out piece of jewelry for me :) It is quite the collection! Of course, I brought all this with me to Vegas to show off to my fancy friends. As if the trip wasn't enough, Kyle surprised me with a pair of SEASON TICKETS to the Broadway Series in Portland. I have dreamed of having season tix to this for my entire existence. Okay, maybe just since we moved to Portland, but it is a super big treat, and will be the gift that keeps on giving all the way until July! I am over the top excited about this. We also had a nice dinner out after returning from my trip. All around, such a special celebration month.

A beautiful life, with challenges and joys, and I am so thankful to be healthy, alive, present with the people whom I love. Thank you Jesus for keeping me here with so much purpose for my life.

Native American studies

I love that my girls are at the grades where they learn so much about Native American studies. Being that we are a STEAM school too, everything they learn incorporates art. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. Maddie recently went through a 4th grade beading project, where they design and create these little bookmarks with a loom. Hers was so amazing, little llamas decorating her design. It took so much more time to design that, and execute it because of the little creatures. I love how her mind works, and how she comes alive when she creates things. Details...

Her class also went to Oxbow Park and Chief Lelooska Cultural Center, to learn more and explore more. Such amazing experiences!

Fall soccer wrap

Another beautiful fall soccer season is on the books! This was such a great year, and I don't mean a perfect "by the books" soccer season. All the kids had amazing coaches, and it was such an awesome growing and learning season for all of them in their own ways.

Max had his third year of soccer, and he is completely embracing and loving soccer as a sport. His coach was such an encourager, and really helped the boys improve their passing skills. They got so good at passing, by the end of the season they would just pass the entire game, and sometimes forget to shoot the ball! Ha ha! Great group of boys, parents, awesome coach. Go Green Ninjas!

Madeline had her fourth year of soccer, with her very special team that she has been with for years. It was a rough start though, actually. The league changed the rules on earrings, and waited until the night before the first game to tell the coaches. Madeline has never taken her pierced earrings out, and the league would not allow them to be taped, etc... They all had to come out. Despite all the support and encouragement in the world, our sweet girl just could not bring herself to take them out. Earring anxiety, let's call it. It came down to a choice - after a few weeks of "trying", she was faced with quitting the team or getting those puppies out. Her amazing coach though (this is where sports matter for character, not just accomplishing an athletic skill)... He saw her struggling, he did everything he could think of to help her brainstorm ways she could overcome this fear. As we all did. In the end, when Maddie decided to step down off the team (with great frustration and sadness on her part), he said "hey! guess what... you matter to this team, you are one of us regardless if you have your earrings in or out, we need you out here, you matter to us!"... so he offered to let her practice with the team, and even help drive so she could attend the games to cheer on her friends. She jumped at the chance. So my sweet little soccer girl, she got to "play" soccer this year, but in a slightly different way than expected. Here's what I find so encouraging, that other people could see her value, aside from what she offers to "soccer", but what she can offer as a friend and teammate. I know God loves my kids, when stuff like this happens :) Go Fierce Kittens!

Marin also had her fourth year of soccer, and REALLY had a turnaround this season. With several team/coach changes in the last couple years, she was starting to lose steam for soccer. I think she really wanted to improve her skills, but was struggling to find it. Which is totally fine with us, we ask our kids to choose one sport they want to do per year, and it certainly doesn't have to be soccer. But in the spring when we were registering, she couldn't think of another option, so she reluctantly agreed to try one last year of soccer. And one more year really paid off. She was placed on another new team - and it was such a perfect, perfect fit for her. Her coach is a seasoned soccer coach, who used to coach his older son, has taken a few years off and now his daughter was interested (first time playing in 5th grade!). He is direct, funny, a clear communicator, understands the sport, know the age, has high standards - and in the end really got Marin EXCITED about soccer again. It warmed my mommy heart to see lights turn on again in her eyes, and see her really experience the JOY of the sport. She loved improving her skills, and she is already excited about next fall - what a great experience it was for her. Go Warriors! (they had Wonder Woman team socks, with little capes and everything - ha ha!)

So that's a soccer wrap - Kyle and I played in the end of year parent/kid game, and managed to avoid old person injuries once again. Go us! Soccer is the best :)
